A mother and son made their first appearance at Swansea crown court this morning (Friday) accused of murdering 84 year old Betty Guy.

Mrs Guy died on November 7, 2011, and her body was cremated soon afterwards.

Her daughter, Penelope John, aged 50, and her grandson, Barry Rogers, 32, were arrested earlier this month and charged with her murder.

Today, John, of Maes y Deri, St Dogmaels, and Rogers, of High Street, Fishguard, appeared before Judge Keith Thomas - John via video link with Eastwood Park prison near Bristol and Rogers from Swansea jail.

They were not asked to enter pleas and did not apply for bail.

Jim Davies, prosecuting, described the police investigation as "unusual and substantial."

As he proposed dates by which various stages in the court process should be reached Rogers could be heard saying, "I love you mum" and John replying, "I love you too."

Judge Thomas laid down January 8, 2018, as the start date for a three week trial.

The next hearing will be on October 13 when Judge Thomas will review progress in the case.
