A cyclist was airlifted to hospital on Monday after a collision with a car near Manorbier - in the same location as a similar serious accident earlier this month.

The rider suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs and collarbone in the crash on the Bier Cross junction of the A4139.

He has been named locally as Jason Hitchen from Manchester, who is well-known in local cycling circles, training with and representing the Tenby Aces.

He was flown to Morriston Hospital, Swansea by the Wales Air Ambulance following the incident involving a white Mercedes car at around 12.30pm.

The road was closed with diversions in place, and re-opened to traffic at 3.45pm.

Another experienced cyclist, Somerset teacher Victoria Gibson, was also airlifted to hospital from the same spot on July 8 after being seriously injured while taking part in the Long Course Weekend sportive on July 8. A fundraising campaign has now been launched to support Mrs Gibson, who was in training for this September’s Ironman Wales.

Said Sergeant Justin Williams of the Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit said of Monday’s incident: “This is the second collision that has happened on this road in the last few weeks that involved a cyclist and a motor vehicle.

“With the large influx of visitors to the area, our roads get busier as well, and officers are reminding drivers and riders to take care when they are on the road, and to drive safely and not put themselves or other road users in danger.

“We want all drivers and riders to be safe.”

Anyone who witnessed either collision is asked to contact Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit by phoning 101.
