PEMBROKESHIRE County Council is consulting the public on the Active Travel existing route map and the Integrated Network Map.

Active travel focuses on walking and cycling rather than driving and the Integrated Network Map is a 15 year programme to improve and introduce walking and cycling routes in the county.

Every local authority in Wales is required to plan such routes within its larger towns as a result of the Active Travel (Wales) Act of 2013.

At the beginning of the year the Authority sought views on what new routes and improvements to routes people wanted to see.

The council has now mapped the routes that meet the criteria laid down by the Act and wants to hear people’s views as to whether additional routes should be included or any routes removed.

Suggested routes have to be suitable for journeys to and from workplaces, educational establishments, health, leisure or other services or facilities and should not include routes used only for recreation.

They also have to be within the 10 county settlements (Fishguard/Goodwick, Haverfordwest, Johnston, Milford Haven, Neyland, Pembroke Dock, Pembroke, Tenby, Saundersfoot, and Narberth) stipulated in the Act.

People wanting to take part in the consultation can fill in a questionnaire found on www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/haveyoursay

The county council is also holding two consultation events in September to finalise its Integrated Network Map before submitting it to the Welsh Government for consideration.

The consultation events will be held as follows; Wednesday, September 6: 10am – 2pm, Pembrokeshire Archives, Prendergast. Friday, September 15: 10am - 2pm, Pembroke Dock Library, Water Street.

The closing date for responses is October 20.

Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Assets, Cllr Phil Baker said: “I would encourage everybody in the County to comment on the draft proposals for the active travel plan - it is essential that residents who know their local area well are part of the consultation and help in the applications made to Welsh Government.

“Pembrokeshire has always made strong bids and the local dynamic is an extremely important part of the process.”

Anyone wanting a hard copy of the questionnaire and / or any of the existing routes maps can contact the county council by telephone on 01437 764551.
