A family from Pembrokeshire who witnessed the aftermath of Barcelona terror attack are joining in the shocked city's act of remembrance at noon today.

Shaun and Jemma Bowie and their children Fin, aged 17, Tom, who will be 13 tomorrow and nine-year-old Bethan were in a holiday apartment on Las Ramblas when the drama unfolded outside yesterday (Thursday).

The family had arrived in Barcelona from their home in Lawrenny just 25 hours before the attack, which took place at around 5pm when a van ploughed into crowds on the popular pedestrianised boulevard, killing 13 people and injuring over 100.

Speaking to the Western Telegraph this morning, Mr Bowie told how the family had gone back to the apartment just 25 minutes before the attack because Bethan was tired.

He said: "We ran out to the balcony as soon as we heard the commotion, and witnessed the immediate aftermath of the attack.

"This morning, we are grateful that our family is safe, and our thoughts are with the poor people that didn't make it home yesterday.

"Today, for us, the only important thing is to pay our respects to the people who got killed and injured yesterday, many of whom were lying on the floor outside our apartment for a long time before the bodies were taken away."

The British Embassy told the family to remain in the apartment until the local security forces advised otherwise, and they did not leave the building until this morning when they headed out to the minute's silence being organised in the main square in Barcelona.

The Bowies are intending to stick to their holiday plans of moving on from Barcelona tomorrow (Saturday) to stay in the Costa Brava resort of Begur, about an hour to the north.

"Ultimately, we need to try and get some normality back for the children after what they saw yesterday," added Mr Bowie, who has posted thanks on Facebook to the family's "amazing and compassionate friends" for their concern.

He said: "The amount of calls, messages, texts etc we received yesterday made us feel really humbled and blessed," and added: "While we are counting our blessings this morning, for many other people, the grieving and pain is just starting. Our thoughts are with them today."
