Welsh League Division One:

Haverfordwest County 2-1 Undy Athletic

IN a high-tempo game, played in swirling winds, the much changed Bluebirds prevailed thanks to well taken strikes from Steffan Williams and Joe Leahy.

With Matthew Broome, Sam Rodon, Tim Hicks, Connor McFenton and Nicky Palmer all absent, the Bluebirds re-shuffled the back four, with three changes.

The game started 15 minutes late after Undy’s bus got stuck in traffic, and the opening exchanges were erratic.

Undy applied early pressure with two corners and a free kick, forcing Leon Luby into a dramatic goal-line clearance.

But then the home side scored the kind of goal they have threatened for weeks.

Charlie Davies laid off Alaric Jones who hooked a touchline cross to the far post, where Williams controlled well and drove in a fine low volley.

Haverfordwest had the better of the rest of the half, and even if they over-stressed the long ball at times, had numerous attempts on goal.

The start of the second halfsaw a pot-shot by Luby from halfway which nearly caught out away keeper Smallcombe, and a free kick by Kristian Speake then stung the stopper’s palms.

After the hour mark, the game deteriorated a little, and although Williams came close from a Jones cross, he was offside anyway.

The Blues then struck a fine second in the 80th minute when Ricky Watts set up Leahy, who turned and fired home from 15 yards. - before Undy pulled one back via a fine strike from Harry Waterhouse in injury time.

This Saturday, Haverfordwest travel to play Cwmamman United.
