REPAIR works of more than one hundred thousand pounds will be carried out to Carew Mill and Causeway, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park has decided.
The National Park authority have agreed to spend £117,000 to prevent leaks in the causeway through repairing the grouting that holds its stonework together.
There are also plans to repair the sluice gates in the wall of the mill and to create a plan for future works to be carried out to maintain the building in the long term.
Building projects officer Andrew Muskett told the national park authority that the mill is in urgent need of repairs at their meeting on Wednesday, September 27.
He described how the mill currently needs an average of £7,000 maintenance work each year to be kept in working condition, and that structural repairs would reduce this ongoing cost.
The authority unanimously agreed to the plans, but some members questioned why the repairs were so urgent if a survey into the state of the mill was carried out over a year ago.
“There is a degree of urgency, but the survey was done in August last year, and the report was out in November last year – why is it 11 months later that we have to make a decision quickly?” asked Mr Ted Sangster.
Mr Muskett explained that the September meeting was the first opportunity to address the issue following the busy summer season.
Repairs will be carried out at the mill before the end of November.
