Two of Haverfordwest County’s talented young players have shown what potential they have by gaining selection for the Welsh Academy (Under 18) squad after playing really well in the trial at Latham Park, Newtown where the team from South Wales beat their counterparts from North Wales by 3-2.

Alaric Jones showed his defensive skills at centre back and Charlie Davies not only played really well in midfield but scored two cracking goals to further enhance his claims.

As a result both have received letters inviting them to join the Welsh squad of 25 which will attend further training sessions at Latham Park before the squad will be whittled down to 16 players for match days against the Republic of Ireland and possibly Gibraltar later in the season.

Cheering them on at the trial were their fathers Alan Davies (with grandad Neil) and Tony Jones, both former county players and with Alan a star midfielder with Goodwick United and Tony as a terrific central defender with Merlins Bridge when both teams were very strong and winning more than their share of silverware.

Charlie (17), a student at Ysgol Bro Gwaun, started out with Goodwick United and made the initial squad last campaign so will be looking to go a step further and achieve a Welsh cap this season. He has been an excellent acquisition for The Bluebirds under 19 squad but has also gone a step further by forcing his way into the club’s first team squad in the Welsh League Division One and impressing from midfield.

Alaric (16) started out as a nipper at Camrose and then had five years as a proven goal-grabber with Swansea City. He played for Haverfordwest County at under 15 level under the guidance of Colin Fawcett and Chrissie Lloyd and was seeking to cement a place in the club’s under 19 development team for 2017/18 - but his pre-season play at left back saw him selected for the first team in their first league match at Port Talbot and he’s been involved ever since.

Both players have huge potential and we wish them every success at Welsh Academy level and as part of the senior team at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
