AN ABANDONED horse which seemed to be taking a turn for the worst after being recued last month by Green Acres Animal Rescue is now on the steady road to recovery.

Tango, a pony rescued with seven others from Lamphey on September 2, was thought to be on his last legs, but after a month of close care and attention at Green Acres’ rescue centre in Little Haven is recovering from sores, infection, and malnourishment.

“The Lamphey Eight” as the horses have been christened, were found running through lanes near the village in early September, and were taken in by Green Acres after being housed temporarily in a farmer’s field.

Volunteers helped to transport the horses by horsebox to be looked after at the rescue centre.

It was not known who abandoned the horses, and as no-one came to claim them in two weeks they legally became the property of Green Acres.

Cotts’ Equine Hospital helped Green Acres with medical care but despite their best efforts one of the horses, Jessie, had to be euthanised when her organs started to fail.

Tango has recently returned from the equine hospital where he spent a week being treated after becoming ill.

“They said it is just time and support he needs now. He needs to be fed little and often and he is doing okay,” said Mikey Lawlor, manager at Green Acres.

Tango needs to spend most of his time indoors and finds it difficult to stand up throughout the day and night, so has been given an extra deep layer of bedding to stop him developing pressure sores.

He spends a few hours each day in the paddock, but fellow rescues Spirit, Oreo, Bug, Crystal, Ruby and Jasper have been split into a male and female herd and now roam free around the rescue centre’s fields.

“To the general public I would say if you come across a horse you feel is abandoned, the best people to call is the RSPCA, your local council or the British Horse Society,” said Mr Lawlor, who added that Green Acres was also able to look after horses but did not have the same amount of resources as other organisations.
