A lovespoon from Narberth has been presented to US politician Hillary Clinton, whose Welsh ancestry can be traced back to Pembrokeshire.

The token was given to the 2016 American presidential candidate by Narberth CP School pupils Annie Phillips and Annie Evans, when she was in Swansea last week.

Former First Lady and US secretary of state Mrs Clinton was in the city to receive an honorary doctorate from the university.

And the Narberth youngsters were invited because of a project the school had been working on in conjunction with Swansea University.

Said headteacher Nia Ward: "We had a great day."

"Both Annies presented Mrs Clinton with a wooden lovespoon from Narberth Primary School - where she immediately associated her connection with the town as it seems that her great-great grandfather is buried here."

Mrs Clinton's great-grandparents were from Wales, and her maternal great-grandparents are said to have hailed from Pembrokeshire.

She had been invited to Swansea University in recognition of her commitment to promoting the rights of families and children around the world. Explained Mrs Ward: "We were invited to attend as the pupil management board within the school had been working with Swansea University Little Voices project last year."

The Narberth pupils joined primary and secondary pupils from Swansea for lunch with first minister Carwyn Jones and education minister Kirsty Williams.

They also met the Children's Commissioner for Wales, Sally Holland. After the ceremony, the pupils met Hillary Clinton in the library on the Swansea Bay campus, where she spent some time with them, listening to what they had to say about the project they had been working on.
