MORE than ten Pembrokeshire community groups are vying for funding from the insurance giant Aviva, which could allow them to realise ambitious projects.

The Aviva Community Fund has opened voting to members of the public this week (October 25) and 14 Pembrokeshire projects are asking for public support to make their ideas a reality.

Milford Haven school are looking for £1,000-£5,000 for a community vegetable garden on site to support families that are unable to grow their own.

In their application they said: “Many low income families in our area, as well as lacking the funds for fresh healthy food, also lack the outdoor space to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

“And so with an abundance of space on school site it would be wonderful to utilise our land in such a productive way, directly impacting our catchment area.”

Green Acres Animal Rescue Centre are hoping to build a new stable block so they can help rescue more abandoned horses, like the eight they adopted near Lamphey last month.

In their application they said: "In recent years the requests for assistance with horses, ponies and donkeys has nearly doubled and we have needed to assess our facilities, it is our plan to construct a new stable block until that will consist of six stables, feed room, tack room and grooming area."

Haverhub, a group renovating Haverfordwest's Old Post Office are also bidding for funding which could transform the building into a community hub for the town.

In north Pembrokeshire, Newport Memorial Hall are asking for up to £10,000 to help transform the medieval pottery kiln built into the foundations of their building into a visitor attraction.
