IMPROVEMENTS to Carew Castle’s walled garden will be made with help of a grant obtained from Visit Wales, as well funding from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
The improvements to the tune of £231,000 will see £84,175 being spent by the national park on building a café within the garden.
A further £146,950 has been awarded to the project by Visit Wales, in the form of a grant to renovate the walled garden to include a vegetable patch, an education area for schools, and a tented area for craft and food fayres.
Meanwhile repair works at Carew Mill and Causeway are currently being carried out, but have exceeded estimated costs with two contractors supplying quotes of nearly £130,000 for the renovations.
Reporting to the authority meeting on November 29, the park’s chief executive Tegryn Jones said the extra expense was because the workload was larger than expected.
At their September meeting, the authority agreed to spend £117,000 on repairing the sluice gates and preventing leaks in the causeway through repairing the grouting that holds its stonework together.
The repair schedule is governed by tides, but work is due to be completed before the end of December.
