As of 3:30 traffic was still moving slowly in the area as the road re-opened.
Drivers have been urged to take an alternative route if possible, but there are reports of slow-moving traffic on the main diversion route to Wiston.
"It's at a total standstill," said one witness who lives on the road.
"There's been cars turning down in my layby, and nothing is really moving."
Police also attended and originally estimated the road would be closed for some time.
