YSGOL BRO GWAUN (YBG) has painted Fishguard and Goodwick red, successfully raising thousands of pounds for Velindre Cancer Centre, a specialist cancer centre near Cardiff, providing care, support and treatment to cancer patients and their families.

On February 2 the school and wider community took part in the national Wear Red for Wales and Velindre day.

In the lead up to the day the school took part in a series of successful fundraisers reaching out to the wider community and promoting physical activity in the school.

One of the first events of the week was the annual Pembrokeshire school cross country. The 50 plus pupils selected to run were asked to raise sponsorship with all proceeds going towards Velindre.

At the event YBG achieved a record third best finish overall across the whole county, with 12 pupils progressing to the next regional round. Congratulations go to Chloe Hale who won the girls Year 7 race.

Another sporting event organised for this the week of fundraising was the Big Match between KS4 rivals Years 10 and 11. The charity match lived up to all expectation, with plenty of drama.

The final score was 2-2. Moving onto penalties Year 10 won 5-4, the winning penalty coming from Dylan Phillips.

Fishguard and Goodwick Touch Rugby Club also hosted an All Red game to support Velindre.

Ysgol Bro Gwaun sold Velindre bands, which proved to be immensely popular, to pupils at break and lunch times as well as to local sports clubs.

Year 8 Pupils hosted a cake stall at break and lunch time, with treats bought in by pupils and staff. The event was a total sell outraising over £160.

The main Event of the week on February 2 had pupils coming to school in red in exchange for a donation this received fantastic support from all staff and pupils.

The day started with a whole school assembly, magnificently delivered by the sixth form, outlining the daily battle with cancer and how the fundraiser would make a difference.

On the same day Fishguard Leisure Centre hosted its own cake sale, wore red and put on get fit challenges, along with a membership draw.

Local businesses also helped paint Fishguard and Goodwick scarlet by wearing red on the day, organising prize draws, raffles, chef specials and collecting donations.

"The support received from the community was overwhelming," said organiser Chris Shousha, WRU Hub Officer for YBG. "With all types of businesses supporting the cause. The feedback was fantastic with all participating organisations wearing red on the day and having some fun on the way."

The final fundraisers were a red raffle and lunch for staff on the last Friday before half term.

"YBG would like to thank all those that contributed towards our school and community fundraiser," said Mr Shousha.

"Together the school has raised an incredible sum which will undoubtedly change and support the lives of those suffering with cancer and provide support for their families.

"Finally thanks to Velindre for supporting our campaign and allowing our school to come together and provide the fantastic opportunity to engage with the local community."
