A Fishguard grandmother is campaigning to have the new road currently being built in Fishguard named Harding’s Way, after inspirational cancer campaigner, Luke Harding.

Luke was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in September 2016 and lost his battle with the disease on Thursday, February 8, this year.

Throughout his illness the 30-year-old refused to be defined by his diagnosis, keeping a positive and focused attitude. Together with an army of supporters from all over the world he raised £30,000 for Withybush Hospital’s Ward 10, along with smaller amounts for Fishguard Health Centre. Macmillan, Paul Sartori and Shalom House.

Hundreds turned up to say a final farewell to him at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on Saturday wearing orange for #Team Harding and blue for his beloved Chelsea FC.

Now Margaret Woodward is urging the authorities to name the road being created by Fishguard’s Chimney’s Link project Harding’s Way.

“I am proud to push to give Luke Harding a fitting thank-you for being Luke Harding, a gentleman and a true hero to so many,” she wrote on social media.

“I hope we get this to happen as it can also instil a bit of community pride again and show Luke's family how far he has touched Mrs Woodward said she intended to write to the Trunk Road Agency and start a petition to propose naming the road in Luke’s honour.

“I cannot think of a more deserving name through all Luke Harding has given.” She added.

The Harding family have previously said that it would be a “fitting tribute” to name the road in Luke’s honour.

“However, it is in the hands of the powers that be regarding a decision,” they said.

Luke’s parents Alex and Pete Harding said: “Personally we think maybe Volunteers Way is something that sums it up perfectly. After all it is the people behind him, and all the other good causes in the community who make it all happen.”
