WITH community enthusiasm mounting for aims to make Tenby a plastic-free town, around 50 people turned out for a beach clean on Sunday afternoon.

The event on the South Beach saw 30 bags of rubbish, including a large quantity of plastic debris, collected.

It was organised by Tenby's White Stuff store, in conjunction with its charity partner, Tenby Surf Lifesaving Club.

Supporters of the Plastic Free Tenby initiative, which was set up following a recent public meeting in the town, also joined in the clean-up, together with passers-by.

Said Sarah Davies, the manager of White Stuff in Tenby: "It was a great afternoon, despite the drizzly weather. People out walking their dogs on the beach came along and offered to take part as well, and everyone was very glad of the refreshments provided by the surf lifesaving club.

"We've had a whole week of fundraising activities for the club, which has brought in around £150, and we are now looking towards helping them fundraise for a litter-pick board for the beach."

Rubbish collection bags were provided by Keep Wales Tidy, and the 30 full sacks collected on Sunday were later picked up by Pembrokeshire County Council in a pre-arranged agreement.

Another beach clean is being organised by the Plastic Free Tenby group in March.
