A HUNDRED-thousand pounds of funding could be made available for improvements in Haverfordwest Town Centre.

The money is part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative fund, a fund reserved for works to improve historic buildings in the centre of town.

This has been used to renovate and conserve buildings on the Castle Square, High Street, Market Street, and surrounding streets.

Buildings which have benefitted include the Pizza Time (2 Castle Square), the former Treehouse Antiques building (10 Dew Street), and the Greyhound Hotel on Mariners Square.

A pot of money allocated to Pembrokeshire College for the project has remained unspent, and needs to be used before the end of the 2018-19 financial year.

At their meeting on Wednesday, February 21, Haverfordwest Town Council discussed the possibility of taking over this part of the fund, to use it for town improvements.

Cllr Thomas Tudor, county councillor for Haverfordwest’s Castle ward and chair of the THI project, attended the meeting.

“Following our [THI] meeting last week it became apparent there are considerable funds left over.

“We wanted to find out what the feeling was regarding it,” he said.

The THI money, which comes from PCC, Cadw and the Heritage Lottery, has strict spending guidelines which must be adhered to.

Town councillors discussed potential ideas for the fund including hosting pop-up shops to foster start-up businesses in the town centre, as well as new cleaning equipment to maintain the streets.

The council agreed to meet with Pembrokeshire County Council’s THI officer Steven Jardine, and an accountant to discuss options for how the money could be used.

“This money is a chance for us to do some great things for the town,” said Cllr Alan Buckfield, the mayor.

The town council could hold an extra-ordinary meeting to discuss the fund following a discussion with PCC.
