THE winners of this year’s St David Awards have been revealed at a special ceremony at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay.

Among them is 20-year-old Mair Elliott, from Haverfordwest, who was named winner of the Citizenship category.

Mair has autism spectrum disorder and has battled serious mental illness since she was 14.

She has spoken publicly about her struggle with eating disorders, anxiety and depression.

Mair spends her time campaigning for improved services and increased awareness of both mental health and autism.

She uses social media to chart her journey, sharing daily achievements, and speaking honestly about how anorexia affects her.

Mair has also spoken at a number of national events and conferences.

Asked how it felt to win, Mair said: "I am completely shocked.

"My illnesses make me feel like I don't have a lot of worth, and so when i got nominated for things like this it makes me realise I am actually making a difference, that my hard work is getting recognised.

"It's an honour, and it makes me proud to be doing the work I'm doing and to be working with such amazing people."

The St Davids Awards were created to recognise the great deeds and often extraordinary contributions made by people from all walks of life.

Congratulating the winners, First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones said: "The winners at this evening’s event are a true credit to your families, friends, communities, and to Wales as a whole.

"Many congratulations to you and also to everyone who was a finalist.

“I know there are exceptional things being performed by inspirational and aspiring people here in Wales.

"As I travel across the country, I get to see first hand the efforts that people make, day in day out to make our small but mighty country great.

“The St David Awards give us a chance to celebrate those people who go the extra mile often without the recognition they deserve.”

Also nominated from Pembrokeshire were Bethany Roberts from Milford Haven, who has worked to promote the rights of young people and children, and Lynwen Brennan - originally from Penally - who is currently general manager of Lucasfilm.
