SCHOOL children from across Pembrokeshire have flocked to the County Showground for an annual fun day.

The Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society Family Fun Day was held on Wednesday, May 16, and saw children from more than 15 schools across the county visiting the showground at Withybush.

Brian Harries, president of the PAS for 2018, said the event was a way to bring together Pembrokeshire’s different communities.

“We are approaching our 40th year we have done this event. As president I cannot emphasise the need for the agricultural community to reach out into the wider community.

“It is such an important part of our function as a society to communicate with the towns and villages throughout the county,” he said.

“This is the most important event we do in the year in terms of reaching out into the community and allowing them to enjoy our facilities,” he added.

There were fairground rides, amusement stalls, and a huge buffet put together by PAS staff.

A DJ took the lead for children from across the county as they danced the Macarena and other dancefloor classics.

Dyfed-Powys Police, and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue visited to show their support, and give tours of their emergency vehicles.

Burns Pet Food was on hand as well to showcase its reading to dogs scheme, run by the company’s charitable foundation.

Children were able to meet the volunteers and dogs who visit schools across west Wales, helping pupils who have difficulties with reading to gain confidence in their abilities.

The scheme has found that reading to dogs can often be easier than reading to teachers for some pupils, and has had profound results on some children.

President Brian Harries and his wife Margaret also spent time as part of a panel judging entries into competitions including creative writing, arts and crafts, and fruit and vegetable sculptures.
