MERCHED y Wawr Haverfordwest branch has rejoiced to learn a library at the town’s new Welsh school will be named after a pillar of Pembrokeshire’s Welsh-speaking community.

Members were proud to learn at their April meeting that the governors of Ysgol Caer Elen had decided to name the school library after Dilys Parry.

The governors also accepted the gift of books bought with money from the fund established in memory of Dilys.

Ysgol Caer Elen is due to open in September and will provide Welsh-medium secondary education for the first time in Haverfordwest for 3-16 year olds.

Dilys was the first teacher in the first bilingual primary unit established in Prendergast in 1966, and took great pride in the development of her pupils.

She was overjoyed when the unit grew to become Ysgol Glan Cleddau, and her Merched y Wawr colleagues are in no doubt naming Ysgol Caer Elen's library in her honour is an appropriate tribute.

Dilys also contributed to many other fields, including poetry, history, wildlife and nature.

As an adult, she learnt German and researched extensively into genealogy.

The fund in her memory has reached £1,800, and it is hoped that it will grow further.

All contributions would be welcomed.

Cheques should be made out to Merched y Wawr and sent to Kay Thomas, Gorwel, Castell Haidd/ Hayscastle, Hwlffordd/Haverfordwest SA62 5NY, and marked Dilys Parry on the back.
