PLANS for a power cable connecting Pembrokeshire and Ireland have gone on display at events around the county - and now the company is asking for feedback on the plans.

The Greenlink cable will be the first of its kind in south Wales, with a capacity of 500MW, the equivalent to powering 380,000 homes.

Greenlink Interconnector, the company behind the cable, is looking at creating as little impact on people and the environment as possible.

Tom Brinicombe from Greenlink said: "We'd hope to get a preferred cable route in a couple of months' time.

"We get feedback from these meetings and from the environment checks to decide the route.

"We are looking for the lowest environmental impact."

Currently, the plan is to have the cable come out of the sea at Freshwater West, but the cable will be planted underground.

"We'd ideally like to avoid the beach and the dune system," Mr Brinicombe said.

"From there it is an underground cable, which we hope to get under existing roads."

Greenlink is looking at three sites for the converter station that will convert the high-voltage direct current (HYDC) to an alternating current.

They hope to be able to screen the converter station using existing trees and where necessary planting new ones.

In construction, Greenlink has said they want to maximise the use of locally based contractors and personnel contributing to the local economy.

Fred Jones, who went to the Pembroke Dock consultation, said: "It sounds like they have had a good look at the environmental impact that they will bring jobs for three years.

"What worries us is we have lots links with other countries and we have to look at it like energy is security and it would be dangerous to spread ourselves too thin."

Cllr Joshua Beynon who also attended the event was positive about the idea.

"I thought it was a really interesting project and I look forward to seeing it come to fruition," he said.

"It sounds good and I think the most promising aspect will be if they use local contractors. It will be really good for the economy and jobs during the construction phase."
