A GROUP of Haverfordwest residents are asking for the people of the town to work together in giving the new secondary school a warm welcome to the community.

Members of the New School Fund, a group set up to raise money and present Haverfordwest High VC School with a gift are asking the public to get involved and show their support.

Peter Lewis, a member of the group, said: “When a family has a new-born it makes sure it is showered with well-wishing cards along with presents.

“I am a member of the family called Haverfordwest. I consider the well-being of its children of paramount importance.”

Since his time working as a teacher in Milford Haven, Peter has been setting aside a penny a day amounting to £3.65 a year or £3.66 in a leap year for the last 27 years.

“On the 25th anniversary I had hoped to make a token gesture by giving the money accumulated to Haverfordwest’s new secondary school. Unfortunately we were still in the fight to get the type of school the people wanted,” he said.

“I will give the £98.62 I have collected over 27 years to the New School Fund being organised by Mark Edwards and friends.”

The New School Fund is aiming to raise £5,000 as a gesture from the community to Haverfordwest High VC School, to present to the chairman of the governors on the day the school opens in September.

The group also wishes to present the new school with a birthday book, containing messages of good wishes to staff and pupils.

Mark Edwards said: “We are over half way towards our target and would invite those who wish to encourage the new school to join our campaign by donating £5 and have their name recorded in the birthday book.”

Haverfordwest High VC School will be an amalgamation of Haverfordwest’s two secondary schools, Sir Thomas Picton School and Tasker Milward School.
