A ST DAVIDS mum and son are taking part in a leg of an arduous 40-mile walk, which includes scaling the highest peak in southern Britain, all in aid of charity.

On June 23, Caroline Willis and her son, 11-year-old Patrick, will be taking part in the Brecon Beacons Great Strides event to raise money and awareness for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

The event is a 40 mile walk starting in Brecon, climbing up Pen Y Fan, past Cribyn; then walking on to Pentwyn Reservoir, Talybont Forest and ending up on the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal.

Caroline and Patrick aim to walk at least 10 miles of this event.

The Brecon walk falls within CF week, which runs from June 18-24.

For Caroline, secretary of the Pembrokeshire branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, there’s a personal reason for taking part in the walk.

“I became involved with the charity when my eldest child, Hank, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of five weeks,” said Caroline.

“It was a devastating time for us as we came to terms with a life expectancy of 31 years for our child and a vigorous physiotherapy and medical regime to get on top of.

“We were fortunate to have the help and support of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust which gave us a lot of information at the time. It also put us in touch with other families who had children with the condition. The CF Trust has helped to bring about great strides within medicine and treatments for people with CF.”

This year, the Pembrokeshire branch celebrates its 40th anniversary, and will be hosting a anniversary charity ball in Crug Glas Country House Hotel, St Davids on October 6.
