A WELSH community project is hosting a family cycle event this weekend to help families improve their heart health.

Dewi Dads – a project that aims to get inactive dads to become healthier – wants the whole family to get involved in their cycle event on Sunday, June 24.

The ride will follow national cycle route 4, between Pembroke and St. David's and features views of Pembroke Castle and St. David's Cathedral.

Peter Arnold, project manager of Dewi Dads said: "Once a month we love participants to bring along their children and partners.

"We want to establish a culture of exercise that's fun, sociable and helps to improve everyone's heart health.

"We do a lot as a team but once a month we spill over into the families and the wider community."

Jim, a regular attendee, said: "Dewi Dads has got me running more with my boy. It's making me feel better and now I look forward to jogging and walking every week."

The group recently received a grant from Heart Research UK and Subway Healthy Heart to help run the project.

The Healthy Heart Grant is made up of donations made in Subway stores across Wales.

Mr Arnold said: "We're so grateful to Heart Research UK and the Subway brand for helping us reach out to fathers and inactive males across southwest Wales. It's a real boost to the area."

Sarah Mirfin, Lifestyle Officer at Heart Research UK, said: "The Heart Research UK and Subway Healthy Heart Grant allows us to support projects like this reach those most in need.

"It's been great to see those who have been inactive really get involved in exercising, particularly with their families.

"There's nothing better than having fun whilst improving your heart health."

The Sunday family session starts at 1.30pm at Waterlook roundabout near Pembroke Dock.

All abilities are welcome and there will also be a number of bicycles and helmets available for families to use.
