HAVERFORDWEST Town Council is inviting members of the public to embark down river and take part in an annual tradition.

The Beating of the Bounds is held at high tide every July in Pembrokeshire’s county town, and is a ceremonial duty of Haverfordwest’s mayor to retain their second title of Admiral of the Port.

The tradition harks back to when Haverfordwest was an important haven for boats and ships coming up the Cleddau to stop at.

For this year’s ceremony, the mayor, Cllr Sue Murray, is inviting the people of the town to join the council in riding out on boats during the ceremony to help inspect the traditional boundaries downriver from the port.

The town council has billed this as a way for people to connect with its work more closely, and get involved in a yearly community event.

“This is a historical ceremony, but it is also for the people of the town,” said Cllr Murray.

“I want to see them on the boats with us.”

Anyone can apply to take part, as long as they live in Haverfordwest.

To apply, write to Haverfordwest Town Council, Picton House, 2 Picton Place, Haverfordwest, SA61 2LU explaining why you would like to attend.
