Drink-driving to collect her son while more than double the limit has led to a Tavenspite woman losing her licence for 20 months.

Lesley Pritchard, 66, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit when she appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday, July 17.

The court heard that officers spotted that Pritchard’s Seat Ibiza had a defective headlamp when they passed her on the Tavernspite to Princess Gate road at 10.35pm on July 1.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, said: “The police turned around to catch her up and when they spoke to her they could smell alcohol on her breath.”

She was found to have 74mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, more than double the legal limit of 35mg, and she told officers she drank three glasses of wine an hour before driving.

The bench heard that she previously held a clean driving licence.

Mike Kelleher, defending, said: “It was a very foolish decision to drive. Her son had been on holiday and had a horrendous journey to Narberth. She decided to pick him up rather than getting a taxi.

“She was shocked by the level of the reading.”

Mr Kelleher added that there was very little public transport in Tavernspite, which would make life more difficult for Pritchard.

Magistrates fined Pritchard £120 and banned her from driving for 20 months.

He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
