PAINTINGS have broken out of the gallery to fill the streets of Haverfordwest for a third year.

The Breaking out of the Gallery exhibition has returned to Pembrokeshire’s county town for a third year, with paintings on display around the streets of Haverfordwest by local artists.

Arthur Brooker, who founded the Breakout, launched the project’s third year with a tour of the exhibits starting at Salutation Square on Wednesday, July 18.

The tour took in all of the paintings in the exhibition, with a large crowd marching through Haverfordwest to see what had been contributed this year.

The theme of the 2018 exhibition is ‘Brighter Futures’, and aims to inspire with ideas of how the artists would like to see Haverfordwest develop in the future.

Speaking before the launch, Arthur said: “As many will be aware, the public opinion of Haverfordwest Town Centre hasn't been great since the arrival of big retail park in the Withybush industrial estate.

“Business within the town centre have been hit with a decrease in footfall forcing many local businesses to close their doors.

“While it is hard for small retail shops to compete with the likes of TK-Max and Debenhams we aim to create something different in our town which the commercial giants will never be able to offer, original Art and Culture in an attempt to see our town bustling with life once again, bringing back the footfall which the local economy depends upon.”

The paintings will now remain on the walls of buildings throughout the town until September.

At the end of last year’s exhibition the works were sold in an auction, with all funds going back towards continuing this year’s project.
