MORE than £2,000 has been presented to the Withybush Hospital Cancer Day Unit appeal thanks to fundraising at Pembrokeshire's Castle School.

The fundraising has been one of the highlights of the independent school's year, with much of the money raised on the school's community day.

This saw the school at Sodston Manor, Narberth throwing open its doors and inviting locals, parents and friends to join in the event which saw over £870 raised.

Other fundraising activities have included carol-singing by the school's choir, staff and parents in Narberth and a charity walk.

Teacher Rebecca Algieri has been instrumental in much of the fundraising, and was delighted to be able to hand over the cheque to volunteers of the Withybush appeal at the school's prize day, which was held for the first time at Slebech Park.

Miss Algieri and fellow teacher, Miss Coleman, also raised money by each running 100 miles in 30 days.

Said Miss Algieri: "It means even more to me, as I have been directly affected by the impact of cancer and have seen the incredible work they do at the day unit.

"Once I had explained this to the pupils, everyone really wanted to help."

Castle School's head, Su Cowell, added: "Every year, the pupils choose a charity they would like to support and come up with original ways of raising money each time.

"I'm looking forward to seeing what they plan for this, our tenth anniversary year, as they are already discussing ten fundraising activities to mark the occasion, hoping to raise an even greater total than this year's impressive figure."
