Drink-driving after dining at a fast-food restaurant cost a Pembroke man his job, his licence and £470.

David Hagan, of Main Street, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday, August 7.

The court heard that Hagan, 47, was spotted by police as he drove his Lexus out of McDonalds and towards traffic lights on London Road, Pembroke Dock at 8.30pm on July 23.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, said: “The light started to go to amber, he obviously did not want to wait, he put his foot down and went through just before it changed to red.”

Officers stopped Hagan to offer words of advice, and breathalysed him when they noticed the smell of alcohol.

Hagan was found to have 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mg, and the bench heard that he had a previous drink-driving conviction within the last ten years.

Mike Kelleher, defending, said there was nothing wrong with Hagan’s driving, and he had been to the fast-food restaurant after not eating that day.

“Unfortunately, as a result of this incident he was laid off work as part of his job involved driving, however, he started work as a plasterer almost immediately.”

Mr Kelleher added that Hagan had concerns he may have an alcohol problem, and was seeking advice about how to deal with his issues.

“He is taking steps to help himself.”

Magistrates banned Hagan from driving for three years and fined him £350. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £35 surcharge.
