THE Rotary Club of Saundersfoot has been busy during the holiday season, and the most recent event was a pig roast, barbecue and duck race on a blazing hot Sunday afternoon, August 5, in Saundersfoot Harbour.

The harbour decking, which was used for this event in 2016 and 2017, was unavailable due to work building an extension, but Saundersfoot Harbour Commissioners still came good, providing space on the slipway to hold the event.

As well as the succulent slow-roasted pork with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling served in a large bap, (or barbecue burger for the less adventurous), there was a selection of other stalls to enjoy: two tables ‘selling’ ducks for the ever-popular duck race, a children’s tombola with a prize for every ticket, an Inner Wheel stall selling welshcakes and soft drinks, a table selling raffle tickets for the Welsh Disabled Sports Team Championship, together with charity stalls raising funds for RNLI, Cancer Research and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

In spite of the hot, bright sunshine, there were crowds of people, visitors and residents, visiting the stalls and having a good time.

The duck race was a success, with Rotarians standing in the water and mud to catch the ducks before they swam through the harbour entrance and off into the sea.

The winner of the first prize of £50 was a young girl all the way from Essex.

Next year, 2019, should be even better when the newly-extended decking should be available to use.

There was one sad note after all the fun.

The club promotes the event by placing large pink ‘pigs’ at locations around Saundersfoot.

Unfortunately, of the seven pigs out there, only five returned to the sty!

If anyone finds a missing pig near the Kilgetty or New Hedges roundabouts, please call Neil Sefton on 01834 811752.
