PLANS to commemorate the end of the First World War in Haverfordwest continue to come together, with an events meeting planned for the start of September.

The End of World War One Commemoration project will hold its next meeting at the Picton Centre on Tuesday, September 11 from 5pm.

Plans discussed by the group of business people, community leaders, veterans and Haverfordwest residents have already gone ahead in the town.

These have included celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the RAF.

The next event planned will be another 100th anniversary celebration, for the St John’s Ambulance in Wales.

Though the charity is 140 years old, it was only in 1918 that the nation’s leading first aid charity founded a Welsh branch.

One of the charity’ ambulances will be on Castle Square on August 18 between 10am and 3pm to celebrate the centenary.

The River of Lights parade, run by Span Arts and spacetocreate is also due to be peace-themed this year as part of the Remembrance efforts.

From November 1, there will be 11 days of events by different organisations in Haverfordwest, plans for which are nearly complete.

These will include concerts by the Royal British Legion and the Cleddau Chamber Orchestra, a dedication at Haverfordwest War Memorial, as well as talks and services throughout the week.

This will all lead up to a series of events on Sunday, November 11, beginning with a Remembrance service at 11am from Salutation Square.

There will also be a First World War exhibition throughout the day at Haverfordwest Museum, open to the public for free.

At 5pm Haverfordwest Massed Choirs will host a Festival of Remembrance.

At 6.55pm the Last Post will be played at the Castle, followed by the lighting of a beacon.

St Mary’s Church bells will ring out for peace from 7.05pm.

From November 12 to 29, an intergeneration art project, called Project Peace, will take place.

Other events are also under discussion to be fitted into the Remembrance events this year.
