PEMBROKE Town council has proposed bringing back the Beating of the Bounds in Monkton.

The Beating of the Bounds is an ancient tradition, still held in Haverfordwest and other areas across the UK each year.

The purpose of the event is to share the knowledge of where the boundaries of parish are.

The motion was proposed by Mayor Linda Brown, who said: “This is an event that fell away some years ago.

“With the state of the river and the navigational issues, it doesn’t look as if we are going to reinstate the ceremony this year.

“But what we would like to do is re-establish the boundary so that next year during the Seafair Haven we would Beat the Bounds at Monkton.

“Currently It is very difficult to navigate, we need to ensure that the boundary marker is clearly visible so that this is something we can reinstate. We are letting too many of our traditions slip by.”

Cllr Jon Nutting pointed out that it may be necessary to ask people who still remember the tradition for where the bounds were.

Cllr Clive Collins proposed was that it should be accepted in principle and that further discussion should then be had including talking to the people of Monkton. The proposal was passed by the council.

Cllr Brown said that she hoped it could be something the community could feel a part of.
