HUNDREDS of people went quackers in the sunshine at Cresswell Quay recently when Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club staged their annual duck race.

A pig roast and veggie stalls did brisk business from the hungry crowds, with a flotilla of sailing and motor boats taking advantage of the high tide to weigh anchor at the small quay opposite the Cresselly Arms pub.

The numbered plastic ducks were launched by Adrian Thomas from Narberth and Whitland Round Table and the £50 first prize was won by a visitor, Mrs Ballard, who asked for her winnings to be donated to the First Responders.

The event raised £1,200 which will be donated to local charities, and a further £2,500 was presented during the evening to Blood Bikes Pembs, Narberth First Responders, the Pembroke Ladies Guild of the RNLI, Tenovus Cancer Care and Wales Air Ambulance. This money was raised by the That'll Be The Day concert organised by the Rotary Club at Folly Farm in July.

During the evening, 20 Rotarians took on tasks which included selling the ducks, serving the pig - ably carved by award-winning butcher Andrew Rees - and serving the vegetarian food which was donated by businesses from the area.

There was also entertainment by solo guitarist and vocalist Jack Castle, performing under cover from the show trailer supplied by Gravells of Narberth.

President Tony Ensom thanked all those who had contributed to the success of the evening, including Colin and John Evans, the landlords at 'The Quay', for an excellent welcome, as always.
