A herdsman’s night off led to a driving ban, after he was found to be double the drink-drive limit while swaying in a local petrol station.

Richards Jelisejevs, of Red Roses, Pendine, appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday, August 28.

Speaking via a Latvian interpreter, he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and without third party insurance.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, told the court that Jelisejevs was smelling strongly of alcohol, his eyes were rolling, and he was swaying from side to side when he called into a Llanteg filling station at 1.40pm on August 9.

Jelisejevs, 29, bought petrol and an energy drink before driving away, and police traced the Audi’s registration number to his address.

A number of bottles of beer were found in Jelisejevs’ caravan when police arrived, and he acknowledged drinking two after arriving home, and consuming a lot of alcohol the previous night.

He admitted having 70mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, double the legal limit of 35mg while driving.

Mr Pritchard-Jones said: “Clearly he was heavily under the influence of alcohol.”

Mike Kelleher, defending, said the herdsman drank after being given the previous evening and that morning off.

He added that he had recently purchased the car, and did not have the funds to insure it.

Jelisejevs was fined a total of £500 and ordered to pay £105 in court costs and a victim surcharge.

Magistrates banned him from driving for 20 months.
