THE Rotary Club of Haverfordwest’s president Gary Lewis recently welcomed Jacabo, a Spanish student from Madrid, on a youth exchange programme arranged through the club and the worldwide network of Rotary International.

Jacabo was staying with Tom Long from Spittal who had spent time with Jacabo with his family in Madrid and on the North coast of Spain. Gary presented them both with club banners.

Thousands of people, aged between 15 and 25, take part every year in the Youth exchange scheme and come home with incredible stories.

Tom and Jacabo took part in the Short Term Programme where 15 to 17-year-olds are paired up with an exchange partner and stay with each other for around three weeks, learning about one another’s country and way of life.

Another opportunity is to go on a camp or tour across Europe and beyond, Rotary members run camps, some with tours, mainly during the summer holiday, catering for age groups from 15 to 25-year-olds.

Most camps last about two weeks, with students mostly living with host families or in hostels. Very few involve living under canvas. The language of the great majority of the camps is English but from time to time there is one in French, Spanish or German.
