HAVERFORDWEST-based Green Acres Animal Rescue, battling to save a desperately ill little dog, has thanked the world-wide messages of support for him.

The plight of little Doberman pup Remus, who has made a miraculous recovery from surgery, has touched the hearts of people around the world, Green Acres Animal Rescue Manager Mikey Lawlor has said.

On Monday, September 3, Mikey first heard about a poorly little Remus.

That evening, Mikey said: “After a quick chat it was decided it best he came in to Rescue and saw our vets immediately.

“He was signed over to us to get the veterinary care he needed to try and save him. When taken to our vets Remus was very dehydrated and obvious gastrointestinal problems so he was hospitalised and put on a drip.”

Green Acres covered the costs of 10-week-old Remus’s veterinary bills, which, to date are £2,500.

An abdominal scan revealed he had some thickening of the intestine and a suspected intussusception of the bowel. Emergency surgery was needed but it was feared it may be too late.

Surgery went ahead, with the removal of over a metre of his intestines.

Mikey said: “Huge thank you to Fenton Vets for a speedy and excellent service; I’ve christened him Remus and he’s now on a heat pad and a drip and we await blood results.

“Keep Remus in your thoughts and prayers.

“We have to get him well that’s all that matters, now no sleep ‘til I hear if he’s OK or not.”

Since then Remus has made remarkable recovery.

Western Telegraph:

Posting on Facebook on Friday evening, Mikey said: “The night I met Remus I knew he wanted to live, his eyes were that of a fighter so I made a promise to him I would fight his corner and do whatever it took.

“I knew there would be resistance, and some would say different, but he wanted to live so that’s all that mattered.

“Today I feel truly glad we did, he has been given the go ahead to be discharged into a foster home, the feeding tube will be removed as he has a healthy appetite. His blood test is now pretty much that of a normal dog, and he is maintaining weight. I would prefer he was gaining but we can’t have everything at once, I guess.

“Some dogs bring people together and our special pup Remus has definitely done that! He is a star; the Doberman community and dog lovers the word over have followed his story and supported him every step of the way.

“Liz Price of DRUE [ Doberman Rescue UK And Europe] has been an amazing support, and Julie Grabham; both have listened to me and offered words of support, with Liz forming a forward plan for him. Local Doberman owner Lesley Lewis and proprietor of The George’s restaurant has also been drumming up support for this special lad. Thanks guys.

“Huge thank you to everyone that’s donated; we are currently at a total of £2,234 and his bill is £2,500, so thanks, amazing, thank you. Special thanks to Al Rees, Liz Clarke and Angela Smithers of local group Dog Friendly Pembrokeshire for their generous donation of £676.25.

“I cannot thank everyone enough for their kindness, donations, messages of support! It really is what keeps us going in these situations and lastly the most important, Fenton Vets, the care Remus has received has been second-to-none and Shaun, Pete, April, Melanie Colfer, Helen Colfer, Kim Griffiths, Rhian Thea Swift have saved this little lad’s life. We cannot recommend them enough.”

Today, September 8, little Remus was able to go to his new home.

Mikey said: “Remus has been discharged today into foster care just a few minutes from the practice. His feeding tube has been removed and I’ve chatted with his fosterer and he seems to be settling OK. Showing interested in the calm whippets he will live with.”
