THE BOMB squad has taken away a suspicious object discovered by builders at Milford Haven's new Costa Coffee today.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed bomb disposal experts have taken away a dummy mortar found by builders at the new cafe.

A police spokesperson said: "The incident has now been brought to a conclusion.

"The device was a WW2 practice device that was full of concrete and never posed a threat as it was inert.

"The bomb squad is taking it away with them."

Dyfed-Powys Police was called to the building site on Victoria Road following the discovery at 11am this morning (September 11).

The police had said the device was initially believed to be an Ordnance Spigot Mortar.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, the Army's specialist team for bomb disposal, was sent to investigate the object.

The EOD's nearest squadron to Pembrokeshire is 721 EOD Squadron RLC, based in the Midlands.

A Spigot Mortar was a Second World War anti-tank weapon given to home guard units in case of a land invasion.

Few, if any, are believed to have been used.

A spokesperson for the Port of Milford Haven said: “We understand that the object uncovered this morning at the Costa Coffee site is believed to be a World War Two Ordnance Device.

"Dyfed Powys Police have advised us that the Bomb Disposal Unit are on route.”

The spokesperson for the port had earlier confirmed the contractors working on the site had contacted the police.
