BATTLING blazes, piggy backing through muddy yards, extending the long levered ladders: these are some the scenes Haverfordwest firefighters have shared from their past ahead of next week’s open day.

Firefighters at Haverfordwest are opening their doors on Saturday, September 22 between 10am and 4pm to show and tell people about their daily work.

UPDATE 21/09/18: The fire station open day has been postponed until Saturday, September 29 due to adverse weather conditions.

Before the open day, the crew has been sharing their past exploits during open days and on the job through social media.

The station has boxes and boxes full of old photographs featuring firefighters past and present on duty.

These images give a glimpse into how the fire service works with people in Pembrokeshire’s county town and, as one picture shows, the surrounding rural communities.

Dressed in full uniform, one firefighter piggybacks on another as they stand in a muddy yard alongside a farmer and his cow.

In another picture, two firefighters battle a demonstration blaze in a haystack, using pitchforks to toss earth to smother the fire.

Another image shows a crowd assembled on the roof of Haverfordwest fire station, watching an engine’s long ladder be extended.

During the open day, Haverfordwest’s fire crew will be:

  • Demonstrating their Aerial Rescue Platform, a Rope rescue display, and other technical specialities

  • Showing off cool vehicles like the RIB boat from Milford Haven and the Fire Bike

  • Hosting a mini funfair

  • Providing sweet stalls and Burger van

  • Holding a chip pan fire display

  • Handing out Fire safety advice

  • Showcasing their work alongside the Coastguard and Police as well as the blood bikes volunteers

More information is available on the fire station’s Facebook page.
