SKOMER Island, famed as a haven for wildlife, particular the much-loved Puffins, is desperately appealing for help to raise funds for a new tractor.

The Friends of Skokholm and Skomer want to help the island wardens and the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales to replace the ageing tractor on Skomer.

The tractor has suffered the ravages of exposure to the wet Atlantic air on the island, and a replacement is now needed.

Posting on Twitter, Friends of Skokholm and Skomer said: “As a volunteer pointed out, it isn't all about getting a shiny new tractor, more about how would daily life on Skomer be without one? Many, many luggage trips with the wheelbarrow for a start. Please help...”

In a Justiving online fundraising page, the Friends added: “There are a few options that depend on the amount of funds raised, as there are choices to be made about the best vehicle, and there are transportation costs to cover as well, but for £30,000 we could achieve the best possible outcome.”

Nearly £5,000 has already been raised to date.
