A homeless woman who failed to provide a drug-swipe said she refused to put anything in her mouth without payment.

Sarah Harper, 37, represented herself when she appeared from custody at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Wednesday, March 20.

Harper, who was previously of Pennar, but now of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a blood sample or drug-swipe for analysis and failing to surrender to court.

Sian Vaughan, prosecuting, told the court that the standard of Harper’s driving caused concern on February 8, and she was seen to clip the kerb.

Police could smell cannabis when they stopped her car, but she refused to provide a sample for analysis at the roadside or at the station.

Miss Vaughan said: “She made unpleasant innuendoes towards the officers, saying that they could not put anything in her mouth unless they paid her.

“She said she was a call girl and they could not afford her on their wages.”

When asked to address the court, Harper said: “I just want a roof over my head, it really shouldn’t be this hard, that’s all I want.

“This is obviously quicker than a council house, so crack on.”

Magistrates sent Harper to prison for a total of 11 weeks and banned her from driving for 30 months. She was ordered to pay £200 in costs and a surcharge.

Harper questioned whether the court could impose a longer sentence.

The chairman of the bench said: “I hope you can sort your attitude out in those 11 weeks.”
