Mr P. G. Roberts

Pembroke Dock

The death occurred in Morriston Hospital on August 12th of Paul Grenville Roberts known as Smurf, of Queen Street, Pembroke Dock at the age of 41.

Smurf was originally from Rhoscrowther and was well known in the community having worked for numerous companies before finding his niche working with Carl Beddis of QCI, where he worked for the past 12 years.

His main interests were playing darts for the Rose and Crown, pool, football and playing rugby for the Quins seconds.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Grenville Roberts (father); Christopher, Gary and Keith (brothers); Jacqueline, Margaret and Jenny (sisters); Rebecca and Susan (half sisters); Jill, Jo, Ian and Mark (wife and partners); Paul, Neil, Liam, Thomas, James, Laura, Ryan, Sam and Cara (nephews and nieces); Gaynor Ninnis (fiancee), and other relatives too numerous to mention.

The funeral was held at Rhoscrowther church, and was attended by about 500 mourners. This was followed by interment in the cemetery. The service was officiated by Rev Tony Turner and the bearers were Gary Roberts, Keith Roberts (brothers), Carl Beddis, Mike Rowe, Darren Lewis, Steve Kanorus (close friends).

Smurf made many friends and this was evident with the amount of mourners who came to pay their last respects.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by E. C. Thomas and Sons, Pembroke Dock.

Mr A. H. R. Preece

St Davids In the obituary for Mr A. H. R. Preece published last week (October 3rd) the name of a bearer, John Evans, was inadvertently missed out.

Mr A. Handley

Neyland (formerly of Pembroke)

Popular businessman Allan Handley, from Handley and Sons, Pembroke, died at home in Honeyborough, Neyland, suddenly, but after a long illness since his retirement 17 years ago.

Allan was an honorary member of Pembroke and District Probus club and of Milford Haven town band.

He leaves to mourn: Glenys (wife); Joan, John and David (children); Patrick, Tom and Laurie (grandchildren); Gwyneth, Joyce and Brenda (nieces).

The service was conducted at Parc Gwyn Crematorium by Rev Martin Evans. There were family flowers and donations to Withybush Hospital. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and sons, Milford Haven.

Prof B. E. D. Cooke

Pembroke (formerly of Cardiff)

Brian Cooke died at home in Pembroke on Friday, September 28th.

Originally from Essex he moved to Cardiff to establish a dental school in 1962.

Retiring in 1982 allowed him to enjoy many happy years travelling with his wife Neilla.

The last three years were spent living in Pembroke.

The funeral took place on Friday, October 5th, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium.

The service was officiated by Rev Roger Jones and the bearers were Trevor Hallett, Colin Burlow, Richard Knight and Scott Lewis.

The principal mourners were: Neilla (wife); Nigel and Maureen; Susan and Charley; Sarah and Rob.

Mr E. J. White

Milford Haven

The death occurred of Edward James White, of Coombs Drive, Milford Haven, who died at Canterbury House, Priory Road, Milford Haven, on October 1st at the age of 84.

He was originally from Cardiff and was a carpenter during his working life.

He enjoyed dancing and listening to music.

The family left to mourn are his wife Effie, his five sons Jeff, Roger, Tony, Andrew and Gary, his daughters-in-law and grandchildren.

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and the bearers were his sons Jeff, Andrew, and Gary and grandson Stephen.

The funeral directors were Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

Mr W. A. Campion

Haverfordwest The death occurred of William Albert Campion (Bill) who died at Montrose Residential Home in Haverfordwest on September 28th. He was 94.

Originally from Talgarth, Powys, he had several jobs after leaving the armed forces including with the Milk Marketing Board and as a driver for Pembrokeshire Laundry, from which he retired from in 1983.

He was in the army and rose to the rank of sergeant major.

He served his country during the Second World War in postings including India and the Khyber Pass.

Bill's main interest was gardening but he also enjoyed bingo and a flutter on the horses.

He is survived by his wife Amelia Campion.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Amelia (wife); Christine and Mark (daughter and son-in-law); Nathan, Alexandra and Phoebe (grandchildren); Graham and Jill (son and daughter-in-law); Kenneth and Mandy (grandson and wife); Molly and Rees (great-grandchildren); Vivien (daughter); Charmaine (great-granddaughter); Tony and Sonia (son and partner); Liam, Melissa and Shaun (grandchildren); Julie, Dai, Gemma, Mark, Tracey and Kayleigh (stepdaughter and family); Anthony and Lisa (stepson and wife); Wenda (niece), also many friends and neighbours and staff from Montrose Residential Home.

The funeral service was held at St Martin's Church, Haverfordwest followed by interment at City Road Cemetery.

The service was officiated by Canon C. Bowen.

The bearers were Graham Campion (son), Kenneth Campion (grandson), Mark Davies (son-in-law) and Anthony Codd (stepson).

Mrs N. Howell

Narberth

Nancy Howell died at home on August 29th.

She was born and brought up in Cumbria and trained there as a nurse.

After qualifying she took up a nursing post in Pembrokeshire, where she met and married her husband Ivor.

Since then she had worked at Withybush Hospital for more than 20 years.

She had many interests including reading, sewing, cooking and especially her four grandchildren.

The principal mourners were: Ivor (husband); Iona and Edward (daughter and son-in-law); David and Lynne (son and daughter-in-law); Bethan (daughter); Cameron, Carys Lowri and Ela (grandchildren); Wilfred and Judith Scott (brother and sister-in-law); Wilfred Howell, Gwyn Howell, Hugh Howell (brothers-in-law); John and Heather Howell (brother and sister-in-law); Olive and John Collins (sister and brother-in-law); Mary and David Morgan (sister and brother-in-law); Merle and Griff Owen (sister and brother-in-law) and numerous nephews, nieces and close friends.

The bearers were David Shakesby, Willie Beynon, Trevor Morris, Bill Ridge, Huw Lloyd and Brian Kent (family friends).

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on September 7th where there was a large gathering of family and friends.

Mrs P. E. Tasker

Herbrandston

The death occurred of Poppy Edwina Tasker, of Haven Park, Herbrandston, who died at the age of 85 in Withybush Hospital.

Originally from Milford Haven, she worked at Waterloo Stores Sweet Shop and the RNAD.

Her main interests were her family, her home, her garden, North Road Baptist Chapel, knitting, crochet and sewing.

She was a lifelong member of North Road Baptist Chapel and singing was her joy and pleasure, especially the singing festival in Haverfordwest.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners were: Pat and Gary Pearn (daughter and son-in-law); Christopher and Marilyn (son and daughter-in-law); Elaine Head (daughter); Nicholas and Janice (grandson and wife); Laurance Pearn (grandson); Adrian and Lindsey Tasker (grandson and wife); Andrew Tasker (grandson); Abigail Pearn, Lillian Tasker, Eleanor Tasker (great grandchildren); Noreen and Bill (sister and brother-in-law); Spencer Tasker (brother-in-law); Donald and Brenda (brother and sister-in-law), and many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

The funeral was held at North Road Baptist Chapel, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn.

Officiating the service was Mr Price of North Road Baptist Chapel assisted by Canon John Davies of St Katherine's Church.

The bearers were Nicholas Pearn, Adrian Tasker, Andrew Tasker (grandsons) and David Charles and Simon Richards (nephews).

Mr R. Jenkins

Kilgetty The funeral was held on September 22nd of Roy Jenkins, of Carmarthen Road, Kilgetty, who died at Park House Court Nursing Home, Tenby, at the age of 79.

Originally from Bridgend he worked for Steel Co. of Wales and Dyfed County Council where he retired from in 1993.

He is survived by his wife Val Jenkins.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners are: Val Jenkins (wife); Ruth and Peter (daughter and son-in-law); Andrew and Vanessa (son and daughter-in-law); Amy, Nia, Cara, Ethan and Sam (grandchildren).

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Canon M. Butler.

The bearers were Andrew Jenkins, Peter Jones, Gareth David and David Markhew.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for the Motor Neurone Society and the Paul Sartori Foundation c/o Stewart Treharne, of E. C. Thomas and Sons, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside SA67 8LT, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr A. D. Ayers

Milford Haven

The death occurred on September 28th at his home in Milford Haven of Albert Dudas Ayers, age 91.

Born in 1916, Dundas was never far from the sea, working first on The Greetings out of Milford Haven, before joining The Motor Minesweeper MMS1, the first purpose-built minesweeper.

Dundas spent the war years sweeping mines around the coast of North Africa and Italy, returning to the UK in 1946.

After a short spell in the Flax Factory, he worked for the Milford Docks Company serving on the lock gates for a total of 26 years, finally retiring to look after his wife Eve.

During his retirement, he enjoyed daily travels around Pembrokeshire with his wife who he was happily married to for nearly 60 years. Cared for by his son Tony, he faced his final illness with great courage.

The funeral service was held at the Chapel of Rest, Dartmouth Street on Tuesday, October 2nd, and was officiated by Frank Newing.

Grandson Jody read a Dylan Thomas poem and the eulogy was read by granddaughter Tasmin.

The service was followed by interment at Thornton Cemetery, Milford Haven.

The principal mourners were: Tony Ayers (son); Paul and Alison Ayers (son and daughter-in-law); Tasmin and Richard Nash (granddaughter and husband); Jody Ayers (grandson); Bertie Ayers (brother); Ken Ayers (brother). Unable to attend was Doll Ayers (sister).

Mr A. Drescher

New Moat

Alois Drescher, known as Lew, of Pontcarreg, New Moat died at Withybush Hospital on September 19th, aged 89.

He was born in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia and his family were foresters, farmers and timber mill owners.

He was conscripted into the German army and saw action in Russia on the Eastern Front.

He was wounded, returned to Germany and was captured by the British Army and transported to a prisoner of war camp at Abbingdon, Oxfordshire, before being sent to PoW camps in Pembrokeshire.

As a PoW he worked on many farms in the locality and on release he worked firstly for David James, of Moat Grange.

For the next 26 years he worked with Ivor James, of Wood Park, during which time he bought Pontcarreg, his dream cottage in the woods.

In 1976 he became a self-employed builder and handyman and worked all around the district.

His hobbies included gardening, bee keeping, fishing and shooting.

He was a great observer of the countryside and lover of nature and an avid and knowledgeable listener of classical music.

He did not return to his homeland, but has relatives in Germany and Czechoslovakia and a large circle of friends in Pembrokeshire.

The service at St Nicholas' Church, New Moat was conducted by Rev Rebecca Davies. Also present were Rev Derek Davies and Nan Warlow.

The organist was Angela James and the bearers were Simon Voyle, Stephen Williams, Alun Phillips and James Evans (friends).

Tributes were given by Robert Voyle and Elizabeth Evans.
