THE level of traffic using the A40 does not warrant the cost of dualling the road, First Minister Rhodri Morgan said during a visit to the Western Telegraph today.
Mr Morgan popped into Wales' biggest selling weekly newspaper during a two-day visit to Pembrokeshire.
During an exclusive interview Mr Morgan said: "Neither the A40 or the A477 justify dual carriageway treatment".
Mr Morgan said the fact that the ferry ports at Pembroke Dock and Fishguard created two different routes meant dualling was not an option.
He added: "They would warrant dualling if they were one merged route but they are not, and they never will be".
He said the Welsh Assembly would continue to try to open up blockages' at Llandewi Velfrey and Robeston Wathen.
