Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit is currently cracking down on illegal number plates.

As part of a national campaign the unit is targeting vehicles with plates that are not the right size, the wrong colour, written in italics, or damaged. A spokesman for the team explained that these are the most common features which make number plates illegal.

Drivers found will illegal number plates will be fined on the spot.

Plates where letters and numbers have been rearranged or misrepresented can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and can even mean the vehicle failing its MOT or the registration to be withdrawn.

"Vehicles registered on or after January 1 1973 must be fitted with number plates which arethe correct colour - white on the front and yellow on the rear with black characters and displaying a BSAU mark.

"Drivers need to comply with the law to ensure accurate eye witness accounts can be made of motoring and crime incidents that occur.' For more information and correct examples of number plates please go to http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/displayofnumberplates.pdf

I hope my plates are legal, as they are what Greens put on the vehicle!
What I am more concerned about is the large number of untaxed (and therefore, most likely!) vehicles.
Why arent the DVLA as proactive as the number of speed cameras and vans at detecting such vehicles?
They are defrauding the state and if you have an accident with an uninsured driver, you will have more difficulties.
It will also reduce road congestion if those defrauding the Treasury are taken off the road, or actually pay their way like the majority of us (fools).

You will be suprised to know that a garage name and a border around your number plate is in fact illegal, or so i was informed by a jobs-worth police officer. They must be blank except for the actual registration and a BSAU number, anything else is illegal. Well Pembrokeshire that is about 90% of us!!!! Sod the clamp down, stop untaxed and uninsured idiots and leave the rest of us alone!

If your plates are legal there is no problem and you wont be stopped...so why the panic?

If Ray Roberts is correct, I do have Green's name and address on my number plate, but no border.
If Mr J W Police Officer wishes to give me a ticket, I will have to sue Green's as I bought the vehicle brand new on the premise that it was legally roadworthy and is serviced regularly.
As far as I am concerned, my plates are legal. I will get back to you, if I am stopped.
I wonder what the Police think about the proposal to introduce performance related pay. Maybe every crime of burglary, assault on the person etc... ie, serious crimes, will have to be resolved, if they are to get a decent payrise.

ray roberts has got it wrong.

at the bottom of the number plate you are allowed the garage name and postcode.

you are not allowed any borders though

In answer to 'billy bob', I really don't think many people are aware their plates are illegal. ignorance is no defence I was told, and when I told mr J W Police officer to 4cough he was kidding me, I was then threatened with a section 5, whatever that is. So my advice to Andrew and everyone is just wait to see if you are stopped and then accept the 7 days to put it right. I think most of the stops will be for misrepresentation of the numbers and letters because I don't think the police are totally sure either. No change there then.

it would be nice to see the police cracking down on real criminals and not car drivers all the time.
all they seem to do at the moment is chase petty car offences and whinge about pay rises!!!
