Travelling to London this weekend? Then AM Alun Davies could have found the quickest route - stopping off in Rosslare, Ireland!

While researching train times from Pembroke Dock he found that a detour to the Emerald Isle could be the fastest way to reach the English capital.

He said: "I was amazed to discover that while searching for the first train to London from Pembroke Dock on a Sunday, National Rail suggested I should first take the Irish Ferries service to Rosslare, hop on the Stena Line ferry service to Fishguard and carry on my journey to London by train.

"This might sound like a joke but unfortunately it highlights the very poor service that west Wales train users have to suffer.

"The first service out of Pembroke Dock is 4.05pm and 11.35am from Milford Haven. This is just not good enough.

"There have been improvements in weekday services, but weekends are a very different matter."

Mr Davies has been campaigning for some time for better public transport in mid and west Wales, and has taken the issue to the transport minister and First Minister, Rhodri Morgan.

"It is affecting the growth of our economy and hampering the efforts of Pembrokeshire's tourist industry by preventing people from getting to our wonderful range of attractions.

"We need to ensure the Assembly's investment in rail services places a priority on services west of Swansea."
