Father died from codeine overdose

5:30pm Thursday 28th February 2008

A sudden change in the behaviour of Leslie Alexander George (aged 36) of 8, Ashgrove, Mount Estate, Milford Haven, saw him leave home and it was believed he was sleeping rough, an inquest heard on Thursday.

A waiter at the Lord Nelson Hotel, he was sacked when he turned up looking unkempt. He then travelled across Europe doing various jobs.

Before recording a verdict that he died from a self-administered overdose of codeine with alcohol ingestion, Deputy Pembrokeshire Coroner Mark Layton heard how Mr George had worked with disadvantaged children and adults before his marriage broke down acrimoniously and, unable to see his daughter for a time, he attempted suicide.

Coroner's Officer Jeremy Davies said Mr George visited his father on Friday December 14th, saying his relationship with his girlfriend had ended. He said he had drunk a bottle of Vodka and then drank three cans of beer one after the other, behaviour which was completely out of character. He said he was leaving Pembrokeshire.

When his daughter in Nottingham failed to contact him by phone the following day, his girlfriend and two friends found his flat dead-locked from the inside.

He was found lying face down on his bed with empty paracetamol and codeine boxes nearby. On his computer was a message to his daughter, and the Deputy Coroner said he was satisfied he intended taking his own life.

A post mortem revealed a codeine level in his body sufficient to have caused his death, with alcohol also present.
