Pembrokeshire County Council's planning committee did not raise any objections to the proposed £800million power station at West Pennar, Pembroke at today's meeting.
Some concerns remain among councillors about vehicle access to the site but contributions towards road improvements are covered in a Section 106 agreement.
County councillor for Monkton, Pearl Llewellyn, said: "We have concerns about extra traffic in Pembroke and the impact on the town. "
Cllr Henry Jones, added: "It would bring back to Pembrokeshire some very needed jobs and infrastructure. Improving the HGV route is important, and making sure the HGVs go that way. The dedicated HGV route needs to be made the quickest route for everybody."
Cllr Tony Brinsden, said: "This is an excellent thing for the county but I sincerely hope the Section 106 will improve the safety on the Nash Fingerpost."
RWE npower has applied to John Hutton MP, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, to build a 2000MW combined gas cycle turbine on the site of the old oil-fired Pembroke Power Station.
The County Council was not deciding on the application but is a consultee in the process and as no objections were raised the Secretary of State is not obliged to hold a public inquiry.
New Build CCGT Project Director at RWE npower, Tim Calver, said: "We welcome the Council's decision which is another important step forward for the project. We have been working with Pembrokeshire County Council and the nearby communities to ensure our proposals are the best possible for the area."
