Wild weather hits county

Pembrokeshire is battening down the hatches today, after winds of up to 40 mph battered the county last night and high tide and strong winds caused flooding in many areas.

Although the high spring tide is now receeding the worst of the weather is predicted to hit the county this afternoon, with warnings that gusts could reach up to 80mph.

At present roads at Gellyswick, Blackbridge, Newgale, Llanstadwell, Neyland Prom, Carew millpond and Amroth are closed as a result of flooding with more possible closures anticipated.

Richard Brown, the county council's civil contingency manager said that the council had 100 people out dealing with situations caused by the weather and that the incident management centre at County Hall had been open all night.

The centre received 19 calls between midnight and 6am this morning, mainly relating to debris and trees on the road.

A light aircraft at Haverfordwest Airport was also tipped over in the high winds during the night.

Preliminary sandbagging took place over the weekend and this has proved successful, although there has still been flooding in certain properties.

In Haverfordwest the river has burst its banks, trapping a car outside the Bristol Trader

He said that since 6am there had been more calls due to flooding. In Haverfordwest the flood levels have peaked and are now receding, with the north of the county following later this morning.

Mr Brown said that the Newgale road should be open this afternoon, there is currently a JCB on site to clear debris of the roadway.

"It has been a fairly quiet night," said Mr Brown. "The level of disruption is not as great as it could have been.

Coastguards said that the winds had gusted up to 39 knots, over 40 mph in the night, with stronger winds forecast for this afternoon.

All ferries have been cancelled and most vessels have taken shelter in port with only minimal shipping in St George's Channel.

You're as bad as Radio Pembrokeshire trying to overstate the weather conditions. It's nothing more than a typical west Wales blow, nothing to write home about. 40mph is hardly hurricane type weather is it?

John Doe I'm not with you on much but on this issue i'm with you all the way. My house faces Pennar Gut and we had a very noisy night but apart from that no major debris or damage as far as I've seen when i've been around and about today. A lot of fuss about basically a typical winter's storm. Maybe that's the 'Inconvenient Truth'not what Gore and his followers are on about. And the BBC and other media have whipped up a 'storm' about nothing yet again by 'stating the bleeding obvious' - it's winter and the wind will blow! Of course, the fact that it coincides with the highest Spring Tides were added to reports just to even things out. 19 callers to PCC overnight? The worst thing was the **** rain lashing against the window - that kept waking me up and is the reason i'm cranky today.

That gale had to be pretty stronger than other's we've had as it took two windows out of my 'lean to' it is original glass, mind it's been there for thirty odd years.

If that was the daughter gale last night god help us if it's the mother one tonight, it'll take the house up, up and away maybe.

I'm not disputing that it was a fair old blow. My problem is with the way the media over state the problems. It's nothing that hasn't happened before and to a lot worse extent.

Just like Radio Pembrokeshire, a few flakes of snow (literally) and they're panicing everyone in the county into buying all the milk and bread available, it's pathetic.

"Oooh, and we've had a telephone call from Mrs Davies in Wolfscastle to say that it is snowing there and if it carries on at this rate it might even settle."

I contacted that fine meteorologist, Michael Fish(famous for playing down the chance of a hurricane in the great storm of 1987), and he advised me to take 2 alka-selzer if there was a problem with the wind.

Never have I seen such an eerie menacing tide, or listened to the mournful, hollowed sounds of a gale, it's very heart calling for the end of it's long journey.

The crashing roof tiles, trees pulled up from their ever stern roots, for the banshees of the storm to cease and leave but will return soon.

Aye, it is a weeping spirit who surely cries no more, as a breeze shall ever softly return to touch the kiss of our spring time, to stay another day.

Uh, NO, I USED to listen to the station until a year or two back when we had a bit of snow and the totally unnecessary repetitive "snow updates" did my head in. There wasn't even that much snow and the dumb a$$ callers calling in with "ooh, it's snowing in haverfordwest ben" and "ooh, it'll be sticking if it carries on like this ben" just did my head in so I switched back to Radio Wales and have been listening to them ever since, much more mature station that don't panic the living daylights out of everyone every time there's a bit of snow.

Yes, the weather wasn't as bad as predicted, but was still pretty stormy.. However, if they hadn't warned us about the possible severity of it then people would have been complaining that they weren't warned to be prepared etc.
But really...How old are you?! Because using phrases such as "Uh, NO..." and "dumb a$$" makes you sound as if you're a 15 year old boy... You are entitled to your opinion but there is such a thing as going over the top... Do you honestly have nothing better to do with your time than post pointless little comments all over this website!?
I don't listen to Radio Pembs either, and I'm sure neither do a lot of people.. but you don't have them on here slagging it off...

Defender of the County!? Was that a self-proclaimed title!?
That is a very derogatory comment, suggesting that the people of this county cannot think for themselves and decide where THEY believe the authorities are going wrong, instead needing you to decide for them.
You may believe you are a great and well respected knowledge on the misgivings of the authorities in Pembrokeshire, but really you are just a small fish in an big ocean, who's criticisms, in the great scheme of things, mean virtually nothing to the people of this county.

I'm not sure how to measure the hot air that this column appears to be generating, but if any are interested in statistics, may I point you to the MHPA website.
Once logged on to our local 'water keepers' site just click on 'local weather' and there you can find current and peak figures for Milford Docks and Pembroke Dock Ferry Terminal.

Referring to Moonshines question about standing for the forthcoming elections, are we to expect our shining knight from Wiltshire to be a candidate in them? He may have led us to believe differently in the past, but then like the recent winds, they too kept changing direction.

Oh, if anyone wishes to make comments about me or my written thoughts, please go ahead as I am big enough to take them. Unlike some who it would appear are unable to.

Sorry I haven't been around for a while guys, took sunshine's advice and left the house for a bit. SCARY!!!!!!

I am a very nice person sunshine, just ask my children, they love me!

I don't think I'm stirring to comment of the outrageous pay rises of AMs when my council tax has risen by almost 4% because they only dished out a 2% rise in grants to my local authority, which will be used to fund our own county councillors' pay rise.

Everything is rising in cost massively. We didn't ask for these AMs to be given extra powers and we certainly didn't ask for their salaries to be increased to be "more in line with MPs".

If they wish to match the two salaries why don't they consider DROPPING the MP's pay to the level of AMs? They are all overpaid and overcompensated in expenses as it is.

And all we ever get is non-sensical generic statements from the likes of Paul Davies condoning the 8.3% rise in his salary because his job description has changed. It's indefensible, it's obscene. These people are given power and they just use it to their own ends.

And all the while we are being taxed taxed taxed to the hilt to pay for it all.
