Coastguards are warning boat users to make sure that they are carrying adequate safety equipment following a series of rescues over the last week.
"Several incidents have been dealt with by the coastguards, lifeboats and port authority where vessels have broken down or the people on board have not been equipped for any kind of emergency," said a coastguard spokesman.
"Although no one came to grief and things were soon resolved any of these mishaps could have resulted in tragedy. "
She continued that all vessels, no matter how small or where they travel to, should have a VHF radio in order to call for assistance. She also emphasised the importance of always making sure that at least one person on board knows how to operate the radio adding that there are many radio licence training courses around Pembrokeshire.
Sea or river farers were also advised to carry other methods of attracting attention.
"Flares are the most useful," said the spokesman. "A mobile phone is handy but not reliable as when at sea level and close to cliffs etc. the signals are almost non existent.
"Also always carry an anchor and have paddles aboard smaller vessels."
Boat owners are advised to contact their local coastguard or lifeboat station to find out ways of ensuring their vessels are in tip top condition and to raise their awareness of dealing with hazards and emergency situations and regular boat users should join the coastguard registration system, again details are available from your local coastguard stations.
"Above all be safe not sorry," said the spokesman.
