Participants raising money for the Kidney Wales Foundation in Fishguard's Walk for Life have topped the chart of Welsh fundraisers, raising over £10,000 for the charity.

The event raised the most money out of the 33 walks taking part simultaneously around Wales last March.

Fishguard's fundraiser was organised by Allison John and her family. Allison who has cystic fibrosis had a liver transplant, as well as a heart and lung transplant, in her late teens.

Around ten years later she needed a kidney transplant and a suitable match was found in her father. The operation brought her into contact with the Kidney Wales Foundation and she became their ambassador.

The 29-year-old medical student rallied friends and family for the Fishguard walk, with around 250 people showing up on a sunny Sunday morning to take part.

Now all the sponsorship is in and a whopping £10,530 has been raised for vital research and to help support kidney patients.

Allison has handed over the cash to the Kidney Wales Foundation and in return has received a trophy to commemorate Fishguard's fantastic fundraising.

"We didn't think for a moment that we would raise that amount of money," said Allison's mother Helen. "We would have been pleased to have collected a couple of thousand.

"Thanks to everyone who who made the effort to get up on a Sunday morning to raise vital funds and to the Sea cadets and St John's ambulance for all their help.

"I hope this year's walkers will be joined by even more people for a revamped course next year."
