Pembrokeshire residents are above average when it comes to recycling unwanted clothes according to the Salvation Army Trading Company.

There are 19 Salvation Army clothing banks across the county, four of which collect above the national average of unwanted garments and two are filled with more than half a ton each week.

The Salvation Army is now hoping to introduce more clothing banks, rural services and even school collections, to help the people of Pembrokeshire continue to help people across the UK.

National Recycling Co-ordinator for the Salvation Army Trading Company, Paul Ozanne recently met with Pembrokeshire County Council representatives to discuss these initiatives. The meeting was described as positive by Waste Management Officer, Paul Watkins.

Mr Ozanne said: “Pembrokeshire County Council and the Salvation Army Trading Company have been working together highly successfully for 16 years to provide as many residents access to clothing banks.

“Last year Pembrokeshire residents donated 234 tonnes of unwanted clothing, which is a huge amount.

“The clothing bank at Morrisons in Haverfordwest collects the most tonnage in Pembrokeshire, around half a ton a week, which is above the national average. Residents in the county have supported the scheme superbly.”

The Winsel Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre also collects more than half a ton a week.

With the number of bogus charity clothes collections increasing Mr Ozanne urged people to donate their unwanted garments to a recognised charity.

“Any charity bank is by far the best way of dealing with unwanted clothes - they will be secure, less likely to be contaminated and less likely to get into the hands of illegal operations” added Mr Ozanne.

Salvation Army clothing banks are located at: Co-op store, Kilgetty.
