Roscoe races to success

An aspiring racing driver from Pembroke has beaten off stiff competition to take the prestigious title of winner of Dunlop Race Academy 2008.

Roscoe Howell, aged 26, raced to victory after two semi-finals and gruelling days of tests and tuition.

During the last Friday's grand final at Bedford Autodrome Roscoe went up against three other finalists and was assessed on track by Le Mans star Calum Lockie, driver coach Mark Hales and former Race Academy winner Simon Shaw.

Roscoe wowed the judges, not only with his on track talent but also with his attitude and fitness which were put to the test in fitness and media assessments.

"Roscoe impressed the judges across the board," said Dunlop’s James Bailey. "He also achieved the top ranking on track and in the fitness and media tests."

The oil refinery technician from Pembroke will now join professionals drivers on the track as he races in the Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup at Rockingham on September 27th and 28th.

He will then jet off to Monaco sample some of the perks and privileges of being a racing driver, as he stays at the world famous Columbus hotel owned by Britain’s own F1 driver David Coulthard.

“This experience is just not something I would have been able to self-fund so Dunlop Race Academy has definitely opened up doors for me,"said Roscoe.

"Sitting alongside Calum, Mark and Simon and receiving tuition from them was the absolute highlight of this experience for me and now I can’t wait to get out on track in a professional race.”
